Security Deposit Demand Letter - Do it Yourself

After the day your tenancy ends (this may not be the same as the day you moved out), your landlord has 3 weeks to:

• return your full deposit, plus interest, OR

• return part of your deposit, with a letter explaining any deductions, OR

• send a letter saying why you don't get any of your deposit back.
   

Do not send the letter until you are sure the 3 weeks deadline has passed.

Before you start the interview, make sure you have the following information.

• Your name and current address

• Your landlord's name and current address

• The address of the place you rented from the landlord

• The amount of the deposit

• The date you gave the landlord the deposit (you do not need the exact date, but you should know the right month)

• The exact date your tenancy ended (this may not be the same day you moved out)

If you are at a library, you can skip this step of instructions. Public computers already have these programs installed. If you are using your own computer, make sure your computer has Microsoft Word.

(Note: Microsoft Word Pad is not the same as Microsoft Word and will not work with this program.)
